Traditionally road safety in Ireland was taught by instructors making classroom visits. However, as road deaths among Irish children began to rise for the first time in a decade, the Road Safety Authority realised that classroom learning was no longer cutting it. They needed a way to give children important real world experience, without putting them in real danger.

Irish kids have been immersed in virtual worlds for years. They are intuitive users of online environments and demand interactivity. Inspired by this we created The Road Safety-Verse – a fully immersive learning metaverse with ten interactive environments tailored to teach specific road safety behaviours. Kids explore the world in their own time, completing tasks and playing games. This creates a dopamine response, with the result that they are more engaged and learn more effectively.

Since its launch, it has been added to the Irish national school curriculum, and nearly 1 million students now have access to the platform.
