Irish Refugee Council: Barriers

Irish Refugee Council: Barriers

In the summer of 2024, as the number of refugees and those seeking asylum in Ireland increased, so did misinformation and disinformation, which led to a loud, angered, and often racist pushback against people coming here.

With literally nowhere to go, they camped on Dublin’s Grand Canal. The government’s response was to evict them from the tents they had given them and erect over 7km of barriers… the ‘land of a thousand welcomes’ overnight became the land of a thousand barriers.

Our response, on World Refugee Day 2024, was to launch a powerful banner-led campaign. Given the Irish Refugee Council’s Media Budget of €0 to influence and counter-influence, we came up with an innovative and non-traditional media placement.

🏆 ICAD: BRONZE

We used the very barriers we were advocating against as our campaign’s media/canvas, and tents and tarps being given to and taken away from refugees in an unending cycle, as our material.

We erected our campaign poster on the fencing at the busiest part of the canal to maximise visibility.
At World Refugee Day, we ran a series of PR and online activations to spread the message to fight and tackle disinformation.
